• Investigated downdraft gasifier throat design on syngas quality, tar reduction and biomass conversion efficiency. • Dual-throat configuration produced higher syngas energy values as compared to single-throat design. • Syn-gas yield increased in the dual-throat gasifier compared with single-throat configuration. • Gas residence time in the reduction zone increased by approximately 40% in the dual-throat design improving gasification reactions and syngas quality.
