• The neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying ADHD were varied with specific symptoms. • Hyperactivity/impulsivity was associated with the F/NAS and E/NAS ratios in hair. • Inattention showed no association with the hormones and ratios in hair. • Oppositional dimension was associated with the MEL/NAS ratio.
