• PM2.5 acute pollution episodes peak in winter evenings due to boundary layer collapse. • Episodes occur simultaneously city-wide, confirmed significant by Monte Carlo test. • ERA5 composites reveal a coherent synoptic stagnation signal spanning ∼1000 km. • Dual-threshold detection methodology validated against national standard exceedances.
