Atomic-scale one-dimensional winding stripes on Fe(001) induced by low-dose Ar-ion sputtering

Abstract

• Atomic-scale 1D stripe structures are demonstrated on a bcc Fe(001) surface for the first time. • Extremely low-fluence ion irradiation creates uniform sub-nanometer stripes with minimal surface modification. • The stripes possess ultralow corrugation (∼30 pm) and a periodicity of only two to three lattice constants. • Their exceptionally short periodicity reveals a lattice-controlled patterning mechanism distinct from continuum ripples. • The findings open a new strategy for atomic-scale surface engineering on bcc materials toward spintronic applications.
