Abstract

• A multiple twinned Mo-Ni@FePO catalyst with engineered interfacial strain and positively charged Niδ+ sites was developed. • In-situ XAS and theoretical calculations elucidated that Niδ+ sites could facilitate the formation of adsorbed hydrogen intermediate. • Mo-Ni@FePO exhibited a low overpotential of 197 mV at 500 mA cm-2 with a stability over 500 h, achieving 1 A cm-2 at 1.85 V in an AEM electrolyzer.
