• B. subtilis MGRP21 alleviated Cr-induced oxidative stress and improved plant biomass. • Seed biopriming with MGRP21 outperformed soil drenching in improving yield, photosynthesis, and stress tolerance. • MGRP21 reduced Cr accumulation in roots and shoots while improving plant biomass. • Hight antioxidant enzymes activity, membrane stability indicated strong physiological protection against Cr toxicity.
