• “Ordovician” strata were deposited in the Late Silurian and Early Carboniferous. • A Paleozoic back-arc extensional system exists in the Xing’an Accretionary Terrane. • Along-strike heterogeneity characterizes the back-arc basins of the HNO. • The final closure of the HNO is constrained to the Carboniferous (ca. 330–310 Ma).
