• Ball-milling Fe2O3/MoS2 for 20 min achieves 93.3 % RhB degradation in 2 min. • FM20@carbon felt exhibits excellent performance in cross-flow filtration device • The FM20 maintains self-regulating acidic microenvironment. • Mo4+–Fe2+ cycling activates H2O2 and promotes reactive oxygen species generation. • Using bean sprouts for toxicity analysis.
