• Thin quasi-isotropic CFRP laminates with different layup configurations. • Six different shapes of projectile impacted on 12 layups. • Perforation characteristics assessed using both experimental and numerical methods. • Fractographic analysis with SEM is performed to analyse failure mechanism. • Front ply stiffness and interlaminar layup delay perforation and improve absorption. .
