Strategies of terrestrial plants to cope with disturbance can be classified based on the whole-plant body, including belowground organs. On the basis of relative longevity of above- and belowground parts and the whole genet, we distinguish six plant functional types. These categories can be distinguished with a binary dichotomous key using existing information on woodiness, clonal growth capacity, and resprouting capacity. The new system will open new avenues of research in functional ecology, especially in disturbance-driven ecosystems.
