• CrI 3 single-layer wrinkles under spatially oscillating electric field. • Maximal bending curvature roughly depends on electric field strength quadratically. • Bending behavior of CrI 3 single-layer is related to inverse flexoelectric effect. • Pre-applied compressive strain promotes wrinkling of CrI 3 single-layer.
