Abstract

Conventional agrochemicals present limitations in both environmental safety and treatment efficacy, demanding innovative solutions from polymer science. This review examines the progress in stimuli-responsive nanocarriers constructed from bio-based polymers. These systems represent a sustainable platform for achieving precision in agrochemical delivery. Due to the intrinsic advantages of renewable macromolecules, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and structural tunability, these systems enable on-demand release of active ingredients in response to specific biological or environmental stimuli. In this review, we first explores the molecular design and discuss their synthesis and assembly processes. We then analyze the mechanisms behind their stimuli-responsive behavior and evaluate their efficacy in controlling pest and disease. Finally, we examine the current technological challenges and identifies key research gaps, as well as propose future directions for the rational design of advanced carriers. This review aims to establish a polymer-centric design principles for the development of efficient, targeted and low-risk agrochemicals delivery technologies, thereby contributing to enhanced agricultural sustainability.
