• Oatmeal as pore former effectively enhances ilmenite reduction in CH4–H2. • With 20 wt% oatmeal, ilmenite pellets achieve 95.14% carbonizing rate and 61% porosity. • Excessive reduction temperature impairs carbonization of ilmenite with 20 wt% oatmeal. • TiC powder successfully obtained by acid leaching from pellets with 20 wt% oatmeal.
