• Straightforward solvothermal synthesis of BiOX nanosheets with side-by-side structure–property–photocatalytic comparison under UV and visible (solar irradiation) light. • Integrated multi-technique dataset (XRD, BET, SEM/EDS, UV–Vis DRS, Mott–Schottky, PL, transient photocurrent, zeta potential) linking features to activity. • BiOBr shows superior non-selective activity with nearly 100% degradation of RhB, AR14, and tetracycline in 80 minutes under visible/solar light. • Dominant O2− oxidation with halide-dependent secondary pathways, supported by scavengers, PL, and photocurrent data. • Scalable, non-selective solar photocatalyst framework for wastewater treatment with transparent methodology and reproducible data.
