• Using BSDS, we compared WM brain configurations in BD, MDD and HCs. • BSDS detected four recurring WM brain states, including 3 DMN-dominant states. • MDD showed higher anterior DMN state occupancy compared to BD and HCs in 2-back. • Higher anterior DMN state occupancy was linked to poorer WM performance in MDD.
