Breath alcohol triangle: comparing reference methods for ethanol mixture generation by laser absorption spectroscopy

A large number of breath alcohol analyzers are used worldwide. To ensure the correct measurement of breath alcohol concentration, all these devices must be calibrated and made traceable to the declared standards. For this purpose, a breath-like gas mixture with a known alcohol concentration was required as a calibration standard. At present, two standard methods are used: the wet method based on Dubowski's equation, and the method based on SI-traceable gravimetrically prepared dry gas mixtures. In this study, the two established standard methods were compared with a third method using SI-traceable liquid and gas flow control by means of a recently developed laser absorption spectrometer. The results are promising, showing an agreement between the two SI-traceable reference methods. However, the Dubowski method-realization of a method-defined measurand-shows 4%-5% higher results. This finding is consistent with the work of other groups and underpins the need for an international approach to revising the empirical factors of the Dubowski equation.
