Since the early days of biological research, scientists have relied on microscopy images to understand how living systems function. Microscopy technologies have improved considerably in recent years, enabling scientists to capture images with unprecedented scale and information content. Modern life sciences researchers now face a conundrum: while they can routinely acquire vast amounts of microscopy imaging data, they struggle to extract the wealth of information they contain. Developing the computational methods needed to mine information from these complex images requires expertise from both biology and computer science, two communities that do not speak the same language.
