• In REM sleep–deprived rats, treatment with Bromelain. • Improves behavioral performance. • Reduces astrogliosis and astrocyte reactivity in the hippocampus. • Decreases dark neurons and protects hippocampal neurons. • Increases BDNF expression while decreasing REST expression in the hippocampus.
