• A calibration free 3D-2D registration framework suitable for modern high-zoom surgical camera. • Converts 3D-2D registration into an equivalent 2.5D–2.5D registration, which is novel. • A novel bias correction, converts the multi-modal registration into an approximated uni-modal one. • Evaluation using a variety of camera types, settings, parameters, and image scenes. • Extensive comparisons with existing approaches in terms of methodology.
