Abstract

• The lane-changing preference of CAVs is found endogenous, fundamentally arising from the headway gain obtained when a CAV follows another CAV, and which contributes to an increased probability of CAV clustering in multilane MV-CAV mixed traffic flow. • A novel definition of the CAV cluster factor is proposed, and its mathematical expression is derived based on two essential factors: the equilibrium headway gain and the CAV market penetration rate. • The stronger the equilibrium headway gain of CAVs, the more significant their lane-changing preferences become, thereby facilitating the formation of CAV platoons.
