Can Urban Ecological Resilience Improve Grain Production Efficiency? Evidence From the Yangtze River Economic Belt

Abstract

In the context of intensifying climate change, ecological degradation, and rapid urbanization, strengthening urban ecological resilience is paramount for boosting grain production efficiency and achieving food security. Using panel data from seven provinces and two municipalities within China's Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2011 to 2022, this study decomposes grain production efficiency into land productivity, labor productivity, and total factor productivity (TFP) growth, and empirically examines the driving effects of urban ecological resilience. The empirical findings demonstrate that urban ecological resilience significantly contributes to improvements across all three production efficiency indicators. Mechanism analysis further identifies that this positive effect is channeled through three key pathways: the improvement of cultivated land ecosystem services, the expansion of large-scale farming operations, and the fostering of agricultural technological innovation. Additionally, the study reveals significant heterogeneity across different functional grain-producing areas and spatial regions, as well as a non-linear relationship between ecological resilience and production efficiency. These findings suggest that prioritizing urban ecological resilience is essential for enhancing agricultural productivity, providing a critical theoretical basis for harmonizing regional ecological conservation with national food security objectives.
