• CANOP first applies spectral invariant theory for novel multilayer canopy modeling. • Rice canopy is used for a preliminary validation of CANOP. • CANOP is efficient and accurate for multilayer canopy spectra modeling. • CANOP can be used for parameter inversion and integrated with land surface models.
