• Heat and drought events reduced the resilience of the coniferous forest carbon sink. • Parallel CO2 fluxes at a disturbed but noninvasively managed forest and a clear-cut. • Both sites were CO2 sources in 2021–25, whereas the forest was a sink 20 years ago. • The clear-cut was a CO2 source year-round; the disturbed forest only seasonal. • The disturbed forest released less CO2 than the clear-cut and indicated recovery.
