Cartographically representing emotions: a review of visualization approaches to emotion mapping in urban design and planning

Cartography has been evolving beyond visualizing objective-measurable phenomena toward subjective-intangible dimensions, such as, experiences, perceptions, and emotions. Numerous visualization techniques have been explored by researchers to represent “emotions” on maps. This study, thus, conducts a Systematic Search and Review of relevant Emotion Mapping studies to identify the visualization techniques utilized for cartographically representing people’s emotional response to the outdoor built environments. Key identified techniques, based on emotion data representation and spatial processing, have been broadly categorized as, (a) discrete point-based representations (point map, emoji map, pie-chart map), (b) aggregation-based representations (heat map, grid map), (c) line- or route-based representations (line map, peak map), and (d) cognitive representations (mental/sketch map); strengths and limitations of each technique has been discussed. Additionally, a link has been observed between the methods of data collection and the visualization techniques based on the type of spatial emotion data being generated and represented, highlighting how some techniques are method-specific, while others are universally adaptable. While cartographically representing emotions presents challenges, the merits are exceedingly substantial. Appropriate visualization may improve the usability of emotion maps and reflection on optimal visualization of emotion maps may guide future researchers and contribute in designing emotionally healthy cities.
