An efficient selectivity-modulated three-component tandem cyclization protocol to access structurally novel imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-1-imine derivatives was developed from pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, aromatic aldehydes, and ammonium acetate. Under the MnCl2/acetonitrile system, a series of 3-(2-pyridyl)-N-(phenylmethylene) imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-1-amine derivatives were successfully afforded in 17-68% yields. However, under the CoCl2/dimethylsulfoxide system, 3-phenyl-N-(phenylmethylene)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-1-amine derivatives were generated in 17-43% yields. By holding the advantage of readily available raw materials, mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope and flexible control over product structures, this novel synthetic method offers an alternative way to imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-1-imine compounds.
