• A 74.75% increase in HA's Ar–OH content was achieved via targeted CC bond cleavage. • PHA further decrease reactive N loss from urea compared with raw HA. • PHA suppresses NH3 loss primarily through urease inhibition rather than AMO activity. • N2O reduction is linked to a disrupted electron transport chain in the denitrification process. • A novel strategy for efficient N fertilizers through targeted HA structural regulation.
