• A bilayer hydrogel is designed for water treatment by coupling SDIE with adsorption. • It reaches 92.91 % evaporation efficiency and 2.72 kg·m−2·h−1 evaporation rate under 1 sun. • It maintains good evaporation property in 400 mg/L Pb2+ solution, 25 wt% NaCl and pH 3–11. • Its Pb2+ adsorption capacity (1 sun) increases by 216 % compared to dark conditions. • It shows excellent mechanical properties and reusability performance.
