• CeO2 modified NiO/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by two-step impregnation. • SMSI effect and oxygen vacancies boost Ni activity and coking resistance. • 5 wt% CeO2 loading shows 79.96% average H2 yield at 800–950 °C and 23.4 % less coke deposition. • The optimal C3H8/H2O molar ratio is 1:14 at ≤750 °C and shifts to 1:12 at ≥800 °C.
