• Proposed a framework for stack flow characterization and measurement optimization. • Complex ducts induced backflow, swirling, asymmetric flow and large flow angles. • CFD pre-investigation-guided 8-point Pitot scheme achieved errors of 0.76%-1.12%. • Four-path ultrasonic flowmeter yielded errors < 0.4% in complex flow fields.
