Abstract

• Coupled CFD-DPM model for predicting erosion of packer mandrel under multiphase flow conditions. • The effects of flow velocity, temperature, particle size, solids loading, and diameter ratio on erosion rate were quantified. • Maximum erosion rate increased by 25.5 fold with velocity and decreased by 83.2% with particle size. • Diameter ratio had the most significant influence, reducing erosion by nearly three orders of magnitude. • The results provide structural design guidance to enhance erosion resistance in downhole packers.
