The need for better integration of information from the knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities with scientific knowledge is now widely acknowledged, and ICES Working Groups and advisory processes are taking steps to advance such integration. This article summarizes ICES history of efforts to integrate information simply across different scientific disciplines. It also reviews the different levels of combining information from different disciplines and knowledge systems: acknowledgement, to alignment, to synthesis, to true integration. For researchers both within ICES and more widely, most progress has been in alignment with some synthesis, but as yet there has been little full integration. The paper summarizes what actually comprises full integration across knowledge systems, and why full integration is necessary when moving from reporting research results to provision of advice. It concludes with four concrete and currently feasible steps to promote more complete integration across knowledge systems, while the slow process of building research teams and advisory processes with full integration of experts and elders from all knowledge systems unfoldsk.
