• Scintillation of Ce:La-GPS single crystal under beta radiation from tritium was measured. • Long-term afterglow observed in the as-grown Ce:La-GPS sample was removed by annealing in air. • Ce:La-GPS shows potential as an inorganic solid-state scintillator for detecting tritium in water.
