• Zircaloy-4 oxidation in 80% RH air rproduced ∼100–150 μm oxide layers, with faster thickening at higher temperature. • Surface roughness ncreased nonlinearly with oxide thickness, especially in the thicker oxide regime. • Complete wetting or absorptive wetting behavior appeared once oxide-induced roughness exceeded Sa ≈3 μm.
