• Contact formation techniques must be developed for progress in organic electronics. • Contact doping by use of MoO3 for P3HT has been reported in this study. • Chemical bonding between Mo ion and S atom of P3HT molecule is formed. • Energy states arise at HOMO-LUMO gap of P3HT due to chemical bonding. • Charges injected from contact can be transferred via HOMO-LUMO gap states of P3HT.
