• Citrobacter freundii CT2 efficiently degraded 96.29 % of CAP within 24 h. • Ten potential biotransformation products were identified, and five distinct metabolic pathways were predicted. • The final metabolites of CAP biotransformation were non-toxic to the environment. • Citrobacter freundii CT2 effectively degrades CAP in wastewater. • Four related genes might be involved in CAP biodegradation.
