Circularly Polarized Ridge Gap Waveguide Antenna Using Composite Transverse-Longitudinal Slots for SatCom Systems

Abstract

This letter presents a Ka-band circularly polarized (CP) ridge gap waveguide (RGW) antenna featuring wide axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth and good grating lobe suppression. A novel composite transverse-longitudinal slot is proposed to generate two orthogonal modes in the transverse and longitudinal directions for CP implementation, respectively. Compared with conventional single-perturbation slot designs, this new method achieves wider AR bandwidth. Meanwhile, discrete ridges are employed to tailor the current distribution on the RGW surface, thereby achieving a wideband characteristic. A stepped cavity is introduced to shape the aperture field for grating-lobe suppression. A prototype is fabricated using CNC machining with discrete metallic layers. Measurements demonstrate an impedance bandwidth of 27.3 GHz to 30.5 GHz (11.1%) and a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 27 GHz to 29 GHz (7.1%), as well as a sidelobe level (SLL) below −12 dB and radiation efficiency exceeding 88%. These results indicate that the proposed antenna is a promising candidate for Ka-band satellite communication systems.
