• A citrate-mediated inter-facial strategy constructs wood-supported multi-layer MOF membranes. • Citrate grafting provides dense carboxyl-rich sites, promoting extensive multi-layer MOF growth. • DFT calculations reveal a preferential thermodynamic binding of Pb(II) via bidentate coordination. • The hybrid membrane exhibits high water permeability, low fouling tendency, and robust recycling stability.
