• Global PV efficiency declined by 0.0083% yr−1 over 1950–2021. • Tropical lowlands showed strong thermal and weak-wind derating. • Wind cooling only marginally reduced global PV efficiency loss. • NEYC separates efficiency loss from irradiance-adjusted yield change. • Climate-aware PV siting should consider heat, wind, and net yield.
