• Early-stage CO2 engineering tailored biomass-derived hard carbon. • Mild CO2 atmosphere regulated thermochemical carbon evolution. • Hierarchical pores and expanded d-spacing improved Na+ storage. • Hard carbon delivered 348 mAh g−1 with 81.1% ICE. • Improved Na + kinetics enhanced rate capability and cycling stability.
