• Multifunctional nanoparticles are fabricated based on coassembly of ICG and peptide. • The nanoparticles integrate theranostic and therapeutic functions for liver fibrosis. • Diagnostic window is extended and diagnostic sensitivity is improved. • Targeted therapy with the FPR2/STAT3-mediated antifibrotic mechanism is achieved. • The nanoparticles show enhanced antifibrotic efficacy with good biocompatibility.
