• The first systematic review on peripartum sleep, cognition, and emotions. • Thirty-three studies were included, with data on 16,563 pregnant women. • Cross-sectional studies mostly explored mood, worry, and various rumination forms. • Prepartum sleep predicts postpartum mood, anger, and emotion regulation. • Sleep emerges as a potentially relevant clinical target during the peripartum period.
