Oceanographic instrument manufacture is more like a consulting endeavor than straight manufacturing since nearly every purchase order is for a different sensor suite or sensor capability than any previous product. In this sense the collaboration between user and commercial supplier is essential and organic. The 3D acoustic current sensor, MAVS, was originally anticipated to be a manufactured product with specifications permitting its incorporation into an independent instrument system as a sensor. It would draw power from its host and deliver ASCII velocity data at RS232 levels with four components from which a 3D vector flow velocity could be generated. But no customer wanted that for at least the first decade of this commercialization of my research tool, BASS. Addition of internal battery, logging, auxiliary attitude sensors, and ancillary sensors of temperature, pressure, turbidity, and conductivity turned the velocity sensor into a current meter. Indeed it turned into a complete instrument system in its own right. Further user requests or demand added more custom features from a GUI optional interface to an analog output for feeding into an existing measurement system for independent digitization. Finally, the original design as a sensor for a standalone instrument system was inverted, and MAVS became a host for other sensors. All or nearly all of these resulted from user input to the commercial production of MAVS.
