• MPs-HMs exerted a more pronounced inhibitory effect on sorghum growth. • MRGs and MDGs were significantly more abundant in the plastisphere than in rhizosphere soil. • Key genera, such as Hydrogenophaga, were found to co-harbor both MRGs and MDGs. • MRGs, MDGs, and core microorganisms were positively associated with sorghum growth.
