• Overuse of non-sterile gloves (NSG) is common and can lead to cross-contamination. • This observational study included acute care, rehab, chronic care and nursing home. • Observers were randomized to locations and times to observe use of NSG. • NSG were worn in 548 (63%) observations and unnecessary in 268 (49%; 95% CI, 44.7-53.1). • Speaking (61%), mobilizing (74%), touching intact skin (52%)and vitals (54%) were key avoidable reasons.
