Abstract

We examine commonality in mutual fund flows across domiciles to make inferences about investor demand in the asset management industry. We observe no leading role for the United States in explaining fund flow commonality across domiciles. However, we identify a pervasive global factor. A domicile’s fund flow commonality is positively associated with its business environment and safety from conflict, but negatively associated with political stability and financial openness. In regional analysis, European domiciles display strong fund flow commonality led by Luxembourg, while funds from the Asia-Pacific region display little commonality.
