• A comparison of lignocellulosic bioethanol production in Aspen Hysys was provided. • Co-fermentation route achieves higher ethanol productivity. • Energy performance of bagasse-to-bioethanol was evaluated across configurations. • Extractive distillation has lower GHG emissions in the carbon assessment. • Co-fermentation with extractive distillation shows the best economic feasibility.
