• A thermochemical recovery system for an ammonia engine is proposed to achieve partial fuel pre-cracking. • The overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the ammonia engine system reach 41.67% and 46.76%, respectively. • Using green ammonia reduces well-to-wake GHG emissions by up to 86% compared to the baseline LNG engine. • The ammonia engine exhibits a lower CAPEX, whereas the LNG engine with CCS demonstrates a superior OPEX. • The TOPSIS algorithm identifies the green ammonia pathway as the optimal strategic balance between the emissions and the costs.
