• New prospective heterojunction visible-light photocatalysts are proposed and studied. • Coupling WO3 with ZnTCPP porphyrin leads to advanced photocatalytic properties. • Reaction mechanism is investigated using CW and time-resolved EPR spectroscopy. • Side reactions yielding metastable radicals are identified.
