• CrN, AlCrN and AlTiCrN coatings were computationally assessed for γ-ray attenuation. • EGS4 Monte Carlo and Phy-X/PSD results showed good consistency for most parameters. • CrN exhibited the most favorable calculated coating-level attenuation indicators. • The coatings are not substitutes for bulk shields due to their 2.3–2.8 μm thickness. • Nitride coatings may serve as secondary/multifunctional surface layers in space-restricted components.
