• Kir6.2−/− mice exhibited attenuated apomorphine-induced locomotor activation. • Acute KATP channel blockade did not reproduce the Kir6.2−/− phenotype. • Kir6.2 deficiency selectively impaired dopaminergic motor responsiveness. • Basal hedonic behavior was preserved in Kir6.2−/− mice.
